So cool that this healthy but lean 22” male Arct So cool that this healthy but lean 22” male Arctic Char will be showing its fiery orange and red spawning colors in just 6 weeks. And the look of pride brought to this young man’s face by this fish, is priceless.
Big thanks to Jordon and Kyle at the Heeney Marina Big thanks to Jordon and Kyle at the Heeney Marina for helping me get the Silver Peso out of the water. It’s been slipped at the docks since the boat ramp closed a few weeks ago. And due to a mechanical issue with one of our Dillon boats, I really needed it over there to accommodate our trip.
If you watch the video, it’s insane to see how far away from the normal marina that we are.Green Mountain is now only 22% full, 96 feet below full pool. The water has continuously been dropping creating a muddy mess of the shoreline. The only way we were going to get my boat out is for Jordon to purposely get his half ton pickup and the boat trailer stuck up to the fenders in the mud. And then the plan was to pull his truck and the boat out with another truck. That didn’t work so we added another truck. Three trucks, one boat. A powerful 90s half ton Chevy, a 2007, and 2013 Chevy Duramax diesels. Just sone good ol’ American power 💪🇺🇸

Right now at Dillon. 15 days in a row of afternoon Right now at Dillon. 15 days in a row of afternoon rains. This is the best one yet.
I’ve seen it all my life. Our droughts come and go in Colorado.
The most notable was the drought of 2002 when we were in worse shape than we are now as far as reservoir levels. Then in March 2003 the front range received the largest blizzard since 1913 and that one storm pulled our reservoirs out of a dire situation.
Beautiful rain storm! We’ve received rain in Summi Beautiful rain storm! We’ve received rain in Summit County everyday since July 14th.
We are currently sitting at 140 to 150% of an average precipitation for July. If this Super El Niño pattern continues as forecasted by NOAA through March both Dillon Reservoir and Green Mountian Reservoir will be plum full this time next year.
The midsummer bite on Lake Dillon can definitely b The midsummer bite on Lake Dillon can definitely be a little tricky. Some trips, we have to work hard for every bite, while on others we hit the timing just right and the fish are feeding aggressively.Although a few trips have come up a little short, we’ve also had quite a few outings this past week where we’ve put a full limit of trout in the boat. Even better, many of those fish have been beautiful cutbows—a hybrid between a cutthroat trout and a rainbow trout that are known for both their fight and aggressive nature. We also caught and released some of Lake Dillon’s wild self sustaining brown trout and arctic char as well as a few kokanne salmon for the pan.
Yesterday mornings 6 hour “Black Diamond” trip got the Lake Dillon grand slam. That’s all 4 species in one day. This time of year it’s always nice to have this kind of success in between the slower days.
That’s fishing! Every day is different, but when everything comes together, Lake Dillon is producing some decent fishing!
Some times to remember out at Green Mountian Reser Some times to remember out at Green Mountian Reservoir for sure. I’m standing at what is 85’ of water at full pool.
Any comments about data centers, golf courses or California taking water from Green Mountian will be deleted, the ignorance won’t be tolerated.
And mark my words, this reservoir will fill back up. Possibly as soon as runoff is complete in 2027. Some times to remember out at Green Mountian Reservoir for sure. I’m standing at what is 85’ of water at full pool.

And mark my words, this reservoir will finally hi ll back up. With the NOAA advisory of a super El Niño winter, the Possibly is there that it fills up substantially. If not close to full pool as soon as runoff is complete in 2027.
This 4 wheeler fell through the ice at Green Mount This 4 wheeler fell through the ice at Green Mountian Reservoir in 2018 in what was then around 60’ of water!
Lying by it was a buddy heater, an ice ladel and a drill. I was going to salvage the storage box and rod rack but the owner has been contacted so I’ll wait to see if the recover it first.
The boat ramp is closed at the Heeney Marina because it is way too muddy to launch. The marina remains open and has a fleet of pontoon boats for rent. So hit them up if you wanna get out and see some pretty interesting sites!
Most all Arctic Char we catch really make you stop Most all Arctic Char we catch really make you stop and admire it. This one was almost pure silver and white—something we don’t see very often, especially in a fish this size. One of the coolest things about Arctic char is how dramatically their colors can change throughout their lives. Untill they reach full maturity they can be bright silver or pale white like this fish. Then when they mature and spawning season approaches in the fall, they transform into some of the most vibrant freshwater fish you’ll ever see, developing brilliant oranges, reds, and deep charcoal coloring.Arctic char usually don’t reach sexual maturity until they’re around 4–8 years old, depending on the lake and food supply. After spawning, those intense colors gradually fade, and we rarely see them turn back into the pure silver and white. They usually maintain some hints of their spawning colors with light pink or orange coloring.
Fish like this are a reminder of how incredible these fish are. You never know what the next Arctic char to hit the net will look like, it seems that none of them look the same..
Some people come out of their mothers womb ready t Some people come out of their mothers womb ready to fish. And this little guy Reese is one if them. Three hours of laser focused fishing got this born fisherman a dozen trout. And every minute of it was a pleasure to be his guide!

Is the curse real?

Green Mountian Reservior 7/6/26 Quite a site to se Green Mountian Reservior 7/6/26
Quite a site to see. Water levels are expected to continue to decline. As Dillon is holding out strong at 79% of full pool, a minimum of 18 feet will be released between now and Labor Day. This should help take a little bit of the pressure off of Green Mountain. The rest of the Denver water impoundments are also holding out well many of them in the 90% full range and all of them above 50% full 11 mile reservoir is 101% full.
The other hopeful aspect is that NOAA has released a super El Niño advisory. We are supposed to have well above average precipitation during the monsoon season as well as the upcoming winter of 2027.
